Pupils were protesting the ban on mobile phones at school. La DdC cut off the network.
The controversy looked set to continue.
Since mobile phones were banned in Crestignac’s schools, several pupils had voiced their bewilderment. Some condemned the measure as excessive, others called for greater freedom, and a few simply continued to check their phones.
The situation thus threatened to develop.
A prospect to which the Duchess of Crestignac could hardly remain indifferent.
After consulting the Minister of Education, Monsieur Buskin, and spending several minutes in what those close to the President of the Territorial Council described as “thorough” deliberation, La DdC decided to put an end to the controversy.
The 5G masts serving schools will be switched off during school hours.
The Duchess was keen to stress that this was in no way a punishment.
« **They wanted their digital freedom restored. The Duchess heard their demands. She eliminated the problem.** »
The measure also offers a considerable advantage: it allows pupils to keep their phones.
La DdC therefore considers that she has met one of the principal demands voiced in recent days.
A distinction deemed essential by the government of Crestignac.
Asked whether this might infringe on individual freedoms, Monsieur Buskin was categorical.
Pupils will remain free to switch their phones on, switch them off, look at them, check that there is no signal, then look at them a second time to confirm that this absence remains unchanged.
The arrangement might even offer unexpected educational benefits.
Temporarily deprived of messaging services and social media, pupils may discover the presence of other pupils in their immediate vicinity.
The ministry is currently studying the implications of this discovery.
The network will be switched off each morning when schools open and restored after lessons.
The President herself performed the first symbolic shutdown of the network, taking the occasion to reiterate that Crestignac always favoured dialogue.
At the end of the ceremony, several pupils immediately took out their phones to protest on social media.
After several unsuccessful attempts, one of them reportedly said simply:
At the time of publication, no message had yet come through.
The measure therefore appears to be working.
La DdC — Crestignac
The situation has not changed. That proves we have it under control.
